Apple confirmed that pre-orders for the Apple Watch Series 12 were open in a September 11 lineup update, with the new wearable scheduled to reach stores and online buyers on September 18. The company’s latest lineup update puts the watch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro launch, but the Series 12 has its own hardware story: an S11 chip, a redesigned health-sensing system, and new intelligence features for the wrist.
Apple’s Series 12 announcement says the watch will measure heart rate every five seconds through the day, measure heart-rate variability more frequently, and add a readiness score. It also says Siri AI will use personal context on the watch through watchOS 27, while Audio Intelligence features are planned for later this year. These are company claims, and some capabilities depend on the paired iPhone, Apple software, or a future rollout.
A health system built around more frequent signals
The centre of the Series 12 pitch is not a new screen or a radical case redesign. Apple says the new Health Sensing System combines optical and electrical heart sensors with the S11 chip to increase the frequency and continuity of measurements. The company says larger, power-efficient green LEDs allow heart-rate readings every five seconds, while recovery HRV and overall HRV are presented as separate measures in the Heart Rate app.
Apple also says the watch can compare a person’s recent activity, training load, sleep score, and vital signs to produce a readiness score from 0 to 10. The score is designed to give a simple recommendation such as Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It. It updates as new data arrives, so the result is not a fixed assessment made once each morning.
Those details make the Series 12 more dependent on interpretation than a conventional step counter. Apple says the readiness algorithm was developed with data from its Heart and Movement Study and with exercise scientists and physicians. The company also links to a study of more than 1,000 participants when describing its heart-rate accuracy claim. That evidence is supplied by Apple, so independent testing will still matter when reviewers can compare the watch with other current wearables.
Audio features arrive later
The S11 chip also supports a second group of features aimed at memory and awareness. Apple says Audio Intelligence will be able to recognize important sounds, help users catch parts of conversations they missed, and create a Siri Recap of selected moments. The company describes the processing as combining the watch microphone, on-device intelligence, Apple Intelligence models on iPhone, and Private Cloud Compute. Apple has not presented these features as a replacement for recording consent, medical advice, or a user’s own judgment.
Apple says the watch will offer Sound Recognition for sounds such as alarms, sirens, doorbells, and a baby crying. Live Rewind is described as a way to review a short recent section of detected audio, while Siri Recap is intended to summarize relevant moments. The functions are due later in the year and will initially depend on language, region, software availability, and compatible Apple devices. That delayed schedule is significant: the launch hardware is available for pre-order now, but the most unusual AI features are not all shipping on day one.
Battery and charging changes are more immediate. Apple rates the Series 12 for up to 24 hours of everyday use and says 15 minutes of charging can add up to 12 hours. Outdoor workout battery life is rated at up to 10 hours, which Apple describes as 25 percent more than the previous model. The watch also adds a redesigned pedometer model and a Steps complication, with the company claiming improved distance and step-count accuracy.
The Apple Watch Series 12 starts at $399 in the United States for a 42mm GPS model, according to Apple’s newsroom materials.
