Microchip has acquired VORAGO Technologies, adding its radiation-hardened and radiation-tolerant microcontrollers and microprocessors, plus patented HARDSIL process technology. In its October 9 announcement, Microchip says the acquisition complements its existing aerospace and defense product lines.

The acquisition release describes VORAGO’s microcontroller work as serving space and industrial markets, with extreme-temperature capability up to 200°C. The VA41630’s own listed operating range is -55°C to 125°C; VORAGO identifies it as a radiation-hardened Arm Cortex-M4 microcontroller and offers a ceramic QFP176 package, according to its product page. Microchip says HARDSIL can improve radiation tolerance in existing commercial semiconductor products without redesign and reduce the time and cost of developing radiation-hardened parts. That adds process technology as well as a catalog of chips, though the announcement does not detail an integration timeline.

Microchip did not disclose deal terms and says the acquisition is not expected to be material to its consolidated financial results. For a different layer of space computing, see our report on SpaceX and Nvidia’s Starmind AI1 satellite-compute payload.
